Boon Lay YEC: It's All About YOUths~!

Boon Lay CC YEC is more than your typical Youth Executive Committee. It is a collection of free-spirited, dynamic volunteers united by their desire to make a difference in community, via organizing exciting yet meaningful events – all done in a fun atmosphere with no lack of of teambuilding, networking and memory-building opportunities.  The Committee comprises a healthy mix of individuals from the various tertiary institutions, junior colleges, centralized institutes, as well as workforce, each adding a different dimension to the already vibrant and energetic committee.

Facelift 2010 is a prime example of one of the many events that the YEC has played a key role in. Held in March 2010, Facelift 2010 was a flagship project to brighten the homes and put smiles on the faces of Boon Lay residents.  Boon Lay CC Youth Executive Committee helped to restore cleanliness and paint the homes of close to 50 needy families, selected from a pool of deserving candidates. Partnering The Youth Club @ Boon Lay, like-minded youths also helped to educate residents with energy-conservation tips to help save Earth’s resources and lower their overall utility burdens.

To foster strong ties and build bridges within and between the various YECs, Boon Lay YEC also took part in the West Coast GRC Team Building Session, held in March 2010. Through a series of physical and mental challenges, members of the various YECs got to know each other, and their counterparts better, having to work together closely to achieve the objectives set out, or complete the various tasks. Of course, there were also the customary lectures and briefs carried out to set the general direction and chart the overall workplan for the YECs of the West Coast GRC.

One group that the YEC particularly likes to focus on is the children of Boon Lay. In the September edition of the Children Programme 2009, the YEC organised a day event where the children of Boon Lay learnt about the Malay culture of Singapore – in particular, Hari Raya. They were tasked, under the watchful eyes of their Boon Lay YEC mentors, to create their very own Ketupat replicas and other traditional Malay cultural symbols – in a hands-on, interactive session held at the Community Centre’s function room.

Through the myriad activities that the YEC organises, spanning the works from kids outreach programmes, to community activities, to policy forums (where important day-to-day issues are addressed and brought up for discussion), to team-building activities, the Boon Lay YEC has grown from strength to strength. So if you want in on the action, come be part of our exciting team!
