Boon Lay Hawkers’ Association was inaugurated by Mr Ngeow Pack Hua, first MP for Boon Lay, in the late-1970s.
The Boon Lay Hawker Centre and Wet Market then was but a modest, single-level building, and one of the earliest conglomeration of stalls serving residents within the area. As housing estates were developed, this home to 71 stalls earned a new look under the Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme (HUP) in August 2004 and a total of 72 stalls now offer the freshest groceries and yummylicious cooked food. This new outfit also gained a new name of Boon Lay Place Food Village and Wet Market and its official opening was graced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
With the support from all current 72 stall holders, some of Boon Lay Hawkers’ Association’s many operations include the following:
1.) Point of liaison between stall holders.
2.) Organising of various activities inclusive of, but not limited to promotion of cleanliness and hygiene, as well as civil preparedness.
Efforts invested by the Association over the past 40 years reaped fruition, resulting in a much cleaner and conducive environment for patrons of the Food Village and Wet Market. Most recently, the Food Village even clinched the Distinction Award in a nationwide competition. Of course, the Food Village also boasts the Fried Prawn Mee which was voted the Top-10 delicacy of Singapore as well as the original Power Nasi Lemak!
